Yet another vaudeville about the raising of the US debt ceiling1 , a restriction introduced by Congress in 1917, came to an end (in principle) yesterday but nevertheless raises questions around the safety of the government bonds of supposedly strong countries. The answer is that they are much less safe than thought. And there are many reasons for this. Official statistics do not reflect all debts.
